Why Brighton AICO Zoom Slide Duplicator £69.99 |
|
|
Is the review model easy to use and handle? |
Using the T-Mount and fitting the duplicator was easy. A tripod is a must. Focus adjustment is difficult | I found it very easy to use. It's quite dark though, making it difficult to see what's going on | It's quite easy to use and to set up with a T-Mount, provided the camera is tripod-mounted |
|
Does
it come complete with slide carriers/accessories? |
Yes. There's a basic mounted slide carrier for six unmounted slides or negs and one for 110 film | It comes with a basic 35mm mounted slide carrier and an unmounted slide/ned carrier | It comes with three carriers: one for 35mm mounted slides, one for film strips and one for 110 size film strips |
|
Is
it well constructed/sturdy?Could anything be improved? |
The two barrels are wobbly at the 1:2.5 ratio, so you can't get a square-on view of the slide | It seems sturdy and it feels good in use | Too much play in the inner barrel when focusing. I found fine focus was best achieved using the zoom ring - it's much smoother |
|
What
copying ratios does it allow? |
Between 1:1 and 1:2.5, depending on the size of the original slide | The range goes from 1:1 to 1:1:2.5 and is marked on the duplicator barrel | The range is from 1:1 to 1:2.5 |
|
Does
it allow slide sandwich techniques to be carried out? |
Yes, using the unmounted transparency film carrier | Yes, using unmounted slides or film strips | slide sandwiches, as well as colour and b&w neg sandwiches, are easy |
|
Does
it produce good quality copies? |
I was surprised by the good quality of the dupes, considering my first impressions from the viewfinder | Yes, the quality of the copies was good | I thought the copies were excellent. You won't get better value for money |
|
Does
it give adequate information on taking flash exposures? |
The instructions provided gave a formula for calculating flash exposures | Yes, quite good and detailed instructions with suggested starting points | No. Tungsten light and tungsten-balanced film worked best. A modeling light/high contrast lighting helps you see what's happening |
|
What's
its best feature? |
The carrier for six unmounted slides or negs. it allows for fast duplicating of lots of shots | Simplicity and ease of use | The zoom adjustment doesn't affect the overall length of the duplicator |
|
What's
its worst? |
The focusing. the two-barrel construction is jerky and gives a metal-on-metal squeaking sound | The dark viewfinder image you get takes some getting used to | The play in the focusing barrel lid was disconcerting but it didn't affect the results |
|
Would
you consider buying this model for your own use? |
No, the focusing was too difficult to control, and £70 is a lot to pay for a piece of kit that wobbles! | Yes, it's good value, and duping and slide cropping was easy. i even managed to use it as a telephoto lens... | Yes, it does its job well and it's fun. With a little practice it's a creative tool. I'd buy one |
