Seagull Right Angle Finder

Right-angle finders are a much-overlooked accesory that I seldom see being used by photographers. Although most camera manufacturers produce them, they rarely get much spaace in catalogues and tend to cost more than most of us can justify. It is nice then, to see that an independent brand has become available in the form of this multi-fit Seagull unit.
Supplied with adapter for Canon EOS, Leica R, Minolta, Nikon, Pentax and Olympus viewfinders, a single model can be used on a variety of cameras. However you will need to check for your particular model as not all Nikon SLRs, for example, have the same size eyepiece surround.
A nice and useful touch that is seldom seen is two-stage magnification from 1x to 2x to help with critical focusing. A generous rubber eyecup makes composition as well as focusing a little easier, while it blocks extraneous light and prevents distracting reflections in the viewing area. |
Further niceties include a 360°rotation about the viewfinder mount so that the finder can be used from above, below and to the side of the camera, which is a nice touch.
Spectacle wearers will be pleased to see +4 dioptre adjustment, though the helical control is difficult to keep in place. While the unit itself is well made, the adapters that allow it to be fitted to different cameras appear not to be of the same standard. Although not especially fragile their rigid plastic seems a bit brittle.
This is an excellent device that combines its principle purpose with additional features to create a genuinely useful facility. You might need to tape the dioptre control, but low-level and around corners photography will be forever easier. Damien Demolder
